A consistent theme throughout this blog is that inspiration can come from an endless amount of sources as long as you’re open to finding it. Today, it came from one of the last places I ever thought it would…
Yikes…this guy. How the hell did that happen, you ask?
Well, when Daddy takes the kids to school, one of our top priorities is finding some jams to listen to on the way. It helps to set a tone for the ride, get the kids excited and hopefully avoids any screaming or other funny business. I feel like part of a dad’s job is to set a positive tone for the family and music is certainly one thing that can help accomplish that…one recommendation for all you Dads out there is to grab a Spotify account for the family. It’s a must in order to comply with all of the ridiculous song requests you’ll get from your kids.
Thanks to the movie Monsters Vs Aliens, one jam that the kids have been loving recently is Axel F:
I don’t have to tell you how awesome it is that the kids have been loving this jam. Some day, they’ll realize why Dad also loves it.
Another song the kids have also recently been loving from the radio, and requested on our ride to school, was “Peaches” by Justin Bieber:
All I really knew of this song was the line “I get my peaches out in Georgia,” because my son and wife would throw it out randomly at home. Today, I listened to the rest of the song while playing it for the kids (didn’t realize I picked the explicit version to play in the car by the way – heads up to look for that little “E” for explicit language or you’ll be doing a lot of fake coughs throughout the song).
One of the other lines in the chorus has stuck with me since:
I live my life right from the source.
Justin Bieber
Oddly enough, I try to live my life in the way “The Beebs” has so eloquently put it.
Go to the source everyday. What does that mean? To me, it means take what this world is giving you. Go outside and breathe it all in. Open your eyes and see the colors, the clouds, the grass, the bugs, the flowers, the traffic…all of it. Listen and hear the birds, the cars, the children, the laughter, the gravel under your feet…all of it. Listen to what people are really telling you. Listen to what your body and mind are telling you.
Take all of it in, right from the source. Don’t do it with any expectations, just be open to what life gives you. You’ll find that simply noticing life around you will get you thinking. It will inspire you. Do this consistently and your thoughts will naturally lead to growth, both as a person and as a dad.
And whenever the chance arises, teach your kids to notice the little things as well. Though it may seem insignificant, this will help teach them appreciation for the world around them.
